DBA Recommends: Panstarrs
France is often overlooked in discussions of where techno has thrived outside of Detroit. It’s anybody’s guess as to why that is because it has produced some of the most iconic acts to ever turn their hand to the genre, but in recent years house music and other more outré styles have taken over from the classic midwest-influenced sound once championed by labels like F Communications. Technorama, the imprint run by DJ Jee and Celine Bouscarle from their Paris Headquarters, is a label that is reintroducing some of those more classic sounds to the country’s record stores. They have worked with well-known artists like Terrence Parker on some choice reissues and also with less familiar artists like Detroit’s Mr. De.
For their latest release the pair have picked a gem from French newcomer Panstarrs who we know little about aside from that he lives somewhere in the mountains and is more or less a stranger to the electronic music scene. On the Ice and Dust EP he puts his hand to familiar Drexciyan tropes but with real panache and flavour. Fans of electro funk acts like Gosub and $tinkworks who have continued to carry the torch for the sound pioneered by Drexciya will enjoy this release.
